A one-day shoot lives or dies in pre-production. By the time the camera is out of the case, every decision that can be made on paper should already be made. Here is the order we work in. Read more craft notes.
Start from the last frame
We write the final shot first. If we know how the film ends, every other scene has a job: get the viewer to that frame.
The one-page shot list
List every scene with a one-line purpose.
Give each scene a hard time box on the call sheet.
Mark which shots are must and which are nice to have.
“If a shot isn’t on the list, it doesn’t exist until the list is done.”
What goes on the call sheet
Crew, call times and one phone number per department.
Location address, parking and the nearest hospital.
Weather backup plan for every exterior.
A note on lenses
Pick two focal lengths and stay on them. Fewer lens changes mean more takes. Code-style text like A001_C014 uses the mono font.
Smaller heading (H5)
Use H5 and H6 sparingly, for things like sidebars or footnotes inside long posts.
Footnote heading (H6)
Sample footnote text.
